Pilgrimage Church of St. Pancratens
GrafendorfGreat vantage point over the East Styrian hills to Burgenland. A panoramic view also gives a view of the Wechsel massif and the wind turbines, which are a little further behind the church on the Masenberg.
On the so-called Pankratiusweg, a pilgrimage route between Vorau and Pöllauberg, you will find the branch church of St. Pankratzen in eastern Styria. This was first mentioned in a document in 1544, but the exact year the church was built is unknown, as is the reason for the construction of the church. In 1800 the church was struck by lightning and just one year later it was completely rebuilt and expanded. The church was rededicated in August 1801 and in 1994 the 450th anniversary of the church was celebrated with a big festival. Worship was only celebrated here on May 12th, the day of St. Pancratius.
A distinctive feature of the church is that, unlike most other Catholic churches, it faces west, not east, with the main axis and altar.
Right next to the pilgrimage church is the Mesnerhäusl refuge, which is used as an inn and offers pilgrims and hikers the opportunity to stop off.
