More information

Pöllauberg, Hotel Retter

The Pöllau Valley Nature Park is located in the heart of Eastern Styria, the garden of Austria, approx. 60 km north-east of Graz and approx. 150 km south of Vienna

By car from Vienna

If you are driving from Vienna to Pöllau bei Hartberg, take the A2 towards Graz and drive about 110 kilometres until you reach the Hartberg exit. From there, follow the B54 in the direction of Pöllau.

By car from Graz

To get to Pöllau bei Hartberg from Graz, take the A2 motorway in the direction of Vienna. After about 30 kilometres, take the Gleisdorf West exit and then take the B54 towards Hartberg/Pöllau. Follow the B54 for about 25 kilometres until you reach Pöllau.

By car from Salzburg

To get to Pöllau bei Hartberg from Salzburg, take the A1 motorway towards Vienna. Drive about 110 kilometres to exit 109 (Salzburg junction). There change to the A9 motorway in the direction of Graz. At St. Michael, follow the S6 towards Kapfenberg. Continue on the S6 until the Krieglach exit. From there, take the B72 and then the L405 to Pöllau.

  • From the Retter Bio-Natur-Resort we start up to the Retter BioGut and walk into the hollow path with the signs "Hirschbirnweg".
  • After approx. 150 meters in front of the Maierhofer farm, we turn left uphill directly at the old Hirschbirn tree, in front of the barn, and cross the road.
  • Once again we cut off the path steeply uphill - to the next road.
  • Now we walk uphill along the edge of the forest alongside the chestnut trees. Before the path levels out, we make a sharp right turn through a "mini forest path".
  • We continue straight ahead on a single track until we cross a meadow and pass the Christmas tree plantation.
  • Once you reach the forest path, continue to the first left fork and then turn right at the next fork. The sign here says "Passage forbidden" - but you are allowed to go through.
  • Always straight ahead before the forest ends, we take the bend to the left and after 150 meters the path climbs steeply up the stairs. At the Christmas tree culture we turn left and can already see the Pöllauberg pilgrimage church.
  • Once there, we walk across the main square to the Pöllauberg church and descend the steps to the forest. We turn left past the "Pious Garden", the "Room with a View" and the herb garden and walk steeply downhill into the forest.
  • At the oil cross, we keep to the right until we reach the Buschenschank Haubenwaller junction. Then we take the small path on the right, always downhill, cross the road and walk along the nut tree culture to the Buschenschank.
  • From there, the signpost leads through the vineyards, over a wooded area and a wooden bridge, directly to the Hotel Retter.
