Get to know Kammern along the Marterlweg no. 2

A scenic hike in winter that is easy to hike with or without snow and with the Ulrichskirche in Seiz is a beautiful destination.
In the market town of Kammern im Liesingtal, there have been a total of four Marterl trails with a total distance of 52 kilometers since 2014. For a hike in winter, all routes are basically possible, although some steeper passages in snow and ice require surefootedness and additional winter equipment (e.g. spikes). Route 2 (blue) is in any case easy to hike in winter, since most of the route is sunny, the ascents and descents are moderate and the Ulrichskirche in Seiz is a nice destination or a nice place to take a break. The wayside shrines and chapels are equipped with information boards so that hikers can learn the stories of the cultural assets as they pass by, so to speak. During the hike, scenic spots invite you to linger and afterwards, the cozy inns in Seiz and Kammern will convince you.

More information

From Graz via A9 to Traboch exit; continue via B113 to Kammern im Liesingtal (62 km, approx. 50 minutes)

From Liezen via the A9 to the Mautern exit; continue via the B113 to Kammern im Liesingtal (58 km, approx. 40 minutes)

We start at the municipal office in Kammern (1), 664 m, and orient ourselves by the overview board on the opposite side of the road. The signpost for the blue Marterlweg can already be seen here in the intersection. We walk up the road (Kalvarienbergweg) slightly uphill and after about 500 meters we see the entrance to the forest on the left, "Marterlweg zu 17". After a few meters the asphalt road ends, where we orient ourselves by the red-white-red markings. We walk along the path continuously uphill until we reach the panoramic path and follow it to the right. At the Marterl waypoint 19 "Stiglitz-Marterl" we rejoin the main trail, but before that we enjoy here the first wonderful viewpoint (2), 777 m, and resting place of the theme trail. Slightly downhill or almost flat, we follow a path through the forest - just watch out for the round white-blue markings. At the Marterl-Wegpunkt 20 "Tormann-Elz" we come out of the forest, see on the right a beautiful wooden house and hike downhill along the forest road. At the crossroads we keep to the left and walk along the softly shaped landscape in the direction of Dirnsdorf. Soon the forest road joins an asphalt road, which we follow to the left and soon reach the small village of Dirnsdorf. Through the village and continue slightly downhill along an asphalt road to the junction with the Marterl waypoint 23 "Schüttbacher",(3), 690 m. Here we turn right, follow the road to the crossroads in Seiz and walk uphill to the Ulrich church (4), 673 m. This short detour is recommended before continuing towards Pfaffendorf. After a few minutes we reach the main road, where we see the entrance to the pedestrian underpass on the right. We hike leisurely along the Liesing near Pfaffendorf (5), 639 m and continue across the valley floor to the highway. Immediately after the highway bridge we turn right and follow the hiking trail to Kammern-Unterdorf. Pass the freeway underpass and continue straight on to the train station in Kammern. From here it is only a few minutes back to the starting point.
The folders with the four ways of the cross can be taken free of charge from the overview board.
Take the ÖBB from Graz or Liezen to Kammern station.
