More information

Pöllau, Grüne Au

The Pöllau Valley Nature Park is located in the heart of Eastern Styria, the garden of Austria, approx. 60 km north-east of Graz and approx. 150 km south of Vienna

By car from ViennaIf you are driving from Vienna to Pöllau bei Hartberg, take the A2 towards Graz and drive about 110 kilometres until you reach the Hartberg exit. From there, follow the B54 in the direction of Pöllau.

By car from GrazTo get to Pöllau bei Hartberg from Graz, take the A2 motorway in the direction of Vienna. After about 30 kilometres, take the Gleisdorf West exit and then take the B54 towards Hartberg/Pöllau. Follow the B54 for about 25 kilometres until you reach Pöllau.

By car from SalzburgTo get to Pöllau bei Hartberg from Salzburg, take the A1 motorway towards Vienna. Drive about 110 kilometres to exit 109 (Salzburg junction). There change to the A9 motorway in the direction of Graz. At St. Michael, follow the S6 towards Kapfenberg. Continue on the S6 until the Krieglach exit. From there, take the B72 and then the L405 to Pöllau.

  • We walk next to the forest north of the hotel until we reach the municipal road and then follow the white-yellow-white markings no. 14. We see Winzendorf on the left, Pöllauberg in front of us and the small church of St. Anna on the right.
  • We leave the asphalt road at the left-hand bend and follow the signposts along a field path through a forest until we reach the road again across wide fields. Turning right, we walk through Söllnerdorf (Schönegg district), cross the Dombach stream and reach the junction with signposts for Winzendorfer Teiche.
  • Passing a paddock, we cross the Dombach again and walk uphill through an orchard to Hochstraße.
  • Turning left and after 70 m right, we follow the municipal road for only a short distance, taking a short cut through the forest before rejoining the road.
  • Finally, we keep left and follow a meadow path along the edge of the forest, which turns into a path through the forest and takes us to the idyllically situated Kartteichen ponds.
  • We circle halfway around the second pond and finally come out of the Kartwald forest again, past two mobile phone transmitters, and turn left onto the road.
  • After approx. 60 m, a path leads away from the road to the left, which takes us downhill to the country road 406 at the Winzendorf ponds.Between the two ponds, the path runs in a southerly direction to the nature park information board at the pond house.
  • After crossing the country road, we hike along the municipal road, slightly uphill, to Winzendorf-Dorf. We then follow the path briefly along the road in an easterly direction, then turn right onto a field path and return to the starting point via meadows, fields and forest.
