Haberlstall-Round, Sommeralm

Since the tour starts at the Sommeralm, you hike over to the Haberlstall hut without any major inclines. A great family hike with a view and a stop in the Almenland Nature Park!

The hut on the Haberlstall-Alm, high above Gasen, has been around for a long time, but has only been managed for a few years. The Pöllabauer family now offers homemade soups, various snacks and pastries to hungry hikers in and around their cozy hut. The hut is located on the Mariazeller-Weg, halfway between the Sommeralmstraße and the Strassegg, in the middle of the alpine pasture area and has great views.

If you want to crown the hike with a summit cross, you can climb up to the Plankogel from the Sommeralm wind turbine for about half an hour and then have a spectacular 360 degree view far out into Eastern Styria from 1,531 m above sea level. The farm road and then the path up over the pasture are clearly visible, although only partially marked.

The path is suitable for the whole family, but there are several pastures to cross. Please observe correct behavior and do not bring a dog with you during the grazing season (beginning of June - beginning of October, depending on the weather).

More information

The tour is not marked as such, we orientate ourselves on the existing markings and boards: "Plankogel-Rundweg", "Gasen/Weg-No. 8", "Haberlstall-Alm", "Gasner Hügelernrunde" and "Stoakoglhütte".

Please take the tour description and a hiking map with you or hike with the outdooractive app.

Please be sure to check the opening times of the huts and restaurants before the hike.

Start: Stoakoglhütte on the Sommeralm
  • From the Stoakoglhütte we go right along the forest path towards “Plankogel-Rundweg” “Gasen/Weg-Nr.8”.
  • We pass the junction down to Gasen on the right and then immediately turn right out (“Plankogel-Rundweg” “Kerschbaumgatterl”). The view now goes down to Gasen and the wind turbines on the Stanglalm.
  • We now pass a hunting lodge, at the top left we see the wind turbine on the Sommeralm.
  • At the crossroads we take the path on the far left and walk up the meadow path.
  • Along the farm road we come to a pasture again, we see the Osser directly in front of us.
  • In front of a small alpine hut we go left through the electric fence passage and then continue right, i.e. H. we leave the “Plankogel circular path”.
  • We go through an electric fence passage again and are now at the “Kerschbaumgatterl”, a well-known crossroads on the Sommeralm.
  • After the Weidetor we are now at the “Kerschbaumalm”. We continue up to the right and now follow the marking “Haberlstall Alm” “Path no. 06/Mariazellerweg”.
  • We now hike slightly uphill across the open pasture to the next pasture crossing.
  • We climb over the electric fence and continue to the right (“Haberlstall Alm”).
  • Always along the path, after about 1 kilometer we reach the Haberlstall Alpine hut.
  • After a rest and perhaps a snack, we take the same path back to the “Kerschbaumgatterl”.
  • At the “Kerschbaumgatterl” we continue straight ahead, we are now back on the “Plankogel circular path, towards Stoakoglhütte”. In front of us we see the wind turbine.
  • Immediately after the pilgrims' cross we continue straight ahead (red-white-red markings "Gasner Hügelernrunde"), on the right we see the Osser, the Rote Wand and the Hochlantsch.
  • At the pasture fence passage we leave the farm road and now walk across the alpine pasture towards the wind turbine. At the bottom right in the valley we see the Holdahütt’n with the Pirstingerkogel lift, straight ahead in front of us is the Sommeralmkapelle.
  • We walk around the wind turbine and walk past the transmitter on the right to the gravel path.
  • We take the gravel path in the direction of Sommeralmstrasse to the “Gasner Hügelernrunde” sign.

If you've never been to Plankogel before, you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity and turn left up here. After about 20 minutes of climbing/100 meters in altitude, the summit with its magnificent 360 degree view is reached. From there it goes straight down to the Stoakoglhütte.
  • Here we turn left down the hiking trail, past the avalanche barrier we reach the forest again.
  • At the fork in the road we keep left and now walk parallel to Sommeralmstraße.
  • We return to our starting point, the parking lot at the Stoakoglhütte, via a wide alpine path.
The hike can easily be extended to Strassegg/“Stroßeggwirt”, in total the path is around 17 kilometers and 510 meters in altitude.
