Hochlantsch-tour above Schüsserlbrunn, Breitenau/H.

From the "Zirbisegger" car park, this tour leads up to the Hochlantsch summit in the Almenland Nature Park, past the Schusserlbrunn pilgrimage church and the GH Steirischer Jockl.

At 1,720 meters above sea level, the Hochlantsch is the highest elevation in the Graz mountains and is also a mountain with an all-round view, including: down to the Teichalm. What makes this “Almenland classic” particularly attractive is the Schüsserlbrunn pilgrimage church, which is located directly on the path.

The small wooden chapel Schusserlbrunn is virtually attached to the Lantschmauer and can only be reached on foot. The name is derived from the rock bowls in the grotto behind the church; the small spring there is said to be healing and especially helpful for eye problems. Many myths and legends surround the pilgrimage site, which was already a place of worship in the mid-18th century. In 1974, the small church had to be moved ten meters to a new foundation due to the threat of rock falls. The church is also known from the television program “9 Places, 9 Treasures”. In 1918 it was voted the most popular excursion destination in Styria and came third in the federal decision.

Schusserlbrunn & the "Steir. Jockl" are closed from October 27th to May 1st!

For the last stretch from Schusserlbrunn up to the summit, sure-footedness is required - and appropriate footwear too!

More information

We only hike on trail no. 740, the path is clear.

For the last stretch from Schusserlbrunn up to the summit, sure-footedness is required - and appropriate footwear too!

Please check the refreshment stops including opening times BEFORE you start your hike!

Start: “Zirbisegger” car park, Breitenau am Hochlantsch

  • We start directly at the parking lot, just before the farm entrance the sign shows “Schüsserlbrunn/Hochlantsch, path no. 740” to the right.
  • Along the farm path we pass a small pond and then across a meadow.
  • Now the quite steep climb begins, always on path no. We climb 740 to Schusserlbrunn, the last few meters along a secured path.
  • We now go up 198 steps to the GH Steirischer Jockl, where we can enjoy the great view over the Breitenau, the Rennfeld and the mountains of Hochsteiermark from the terrace.
  • From the terrace we climb the few steps to the entrance to the hiking trail.
  • Still on “path no. 740, Hochlantsch/Teichalm” we are now climbing in high alpine terrain, partly insured, up to the summit cross. From here in the east we can see the Teichalm with the lake, the Osser and the Sattelberge, and in the north we can see the mountain range along the Breitenau.

From here the path no. 740 further to the Teichalm, the path leads mainly through the forest, but is quite easy to walk. To return to the parking lot, please order a SAM shared taxi to the “Teichalm/Teichwirt, WZ3424” station in good time for a trip to the “Zirbisegger parking lot, station BM3630”.

  • Return to the parking lot on the same path no. 740, Schusserlbrunn or Breitenau”. Please be careful when it rains, the wet stones can be very slippery.

A stop at Steir. Jockl should definitely plan to visit Jockl, not only because of the tasty cuisine, but also because of the view from the terrace.
